Hello Gentle Readers.
Well so much for an October 1st debut of the Rémy In The City ‘blogazine’ -if I may use the term. Sadly, many things conspired to occupy my time and resources all about the same time with the effect of forcing this blog to be pushed to the back burner for the mo. Bad, bad Rémy. On top of that, I am involved in an exciting new project that recently took on great new life, and with it a great deal of my undivided attention. Watch for an important announcement about the launch of this new project in the near future.
While I’m polishing a few stories and other posts destined for this space, I feel the need to offer a few little entries as a ‘soft’ debut, if you will, to let all know this blog isn’t just a tease. To that end, dear reader, here is my report on the recent Pink Dot event in salt lake city.
As part of the Oct. 11th’s National Coming Out Day, Pink Dot Utah -a project of the Support Love Courage Council (which is an affiliate of the Pride Center)- took a cue from Pink Dot Singapore and rallied the community, gay, straight, and those somewhere in-between, to gather at Spring Mobile Ballpark to form a giant pink dot formed by pink shirt wearing participants. (Photos to come).
Not a bad turn out, even though I expected more people to join in (I’m looking at you, my friends, who said you’d be there, but flaked). I ran into some old friend I hadn’t seen in some time. And joined up with a new contributor to this blog, the most delightful and very talented Raven (as I will call her for now). It was Raven who provided us with the video below.
Salt Lake City is very fortunate to have a strong LGBT community, and enjoys significant support from the metropolitan area as a whole. A progressive oasis in the midst of the overwhelming oppressive majority that is ‘red’ Utah -not to be confused with University of Utah red, which is the good kind of red. (I’m calling you out Mormon Church and Republicans!). Whoops, somehow I’ve found myself up on my soap box for a moment there.
My two gripes about the Pink Dot Utah event, and you know I always have gripes (the occupational hazard of being a snob), was the positioning of the event stage which forced everyone to face into the setting sun, burning retinas and causing cataracts. Next year, Pink Dot, please place the stage anywhere but on the west side of the event venue. My other gripe, and this is a big one for me, was the release of helium-filled balloons. Everyone knows by now that these balloons eventually come down and pollute the environment, which is bad enough, but even worse these downed balloons become a choking hazard and death sentence for far too many animals who mistake these deflated deathtraps for tasty morsels. (The animals may be dumb as far as tasty morsels are concerned, but that’s no reason they should die so that we may enjoy a moment of frivolity). Damn, I just can’t stay off my soap box…
I look forward to an annual Pink Dot event, as I foresee this growing into a terrific autumnal tradition. In the mean time, check out the aforementioned Raven’s Pink Dot musings here.
Until next time my dear readers, enjoy this beautiful time of year.
Hello Gentle Reader. There are times when I just feel the need to indulge in something sweet and decadent. More often than not that sweet decadence comes in the form of dessert. But in these sad times, in this sad world we live in, we are often assaulted with such culinary atrocities as deep fried Twinkies or a sickeningly sweet pile of artificially flavoured ice-cream topped with artificially flavoured chocolate sauce, covered in artificially flavoured non-dairy whipped (non)cream.
